Kolkata Confidential: Dada bats

The ghosts of ponzi schemes continue to haunt Kolkata football.

The ghosts of ponzi schemes continue to haunt Kolkata football. More than half the clubs in the Maidan were aided by the companies that dealt in the chit fund market. After the Saradha Group went bust, the clubs are losing sponsors thick and fast. Small clubs are the worst sufferers. Barisha Sporting, however, has the privilege of having Sourav Ganguly on board as the club’s general secretary. The club play in the first division in Calcutta Football League, but never had a sponsor. This year, their football budget is going to be close to Rs 8 lakh and the former India captain has assured them of roping in a financier.

Before the ban

The health department is mulling over the idea of banning paan masalas and gutka. But at Writers’,some of the ministers and bureaucrats are seen munching gutka and carrying its pouches. What would happen to them if the ban comes into effect?

Armchair protests

In political circles,it was the BJP so far known to rely more on press conferences than hitting the streets for agitations. Now,the CPM seems to have taken up that role. Almost every day,it is calling a press conference at its Alimuddin Street headquarters and on some days, two press conferences are held leaving the mediapersons a harried lot. Have the Marxists given up its earlier tools of protest like street corner meetings, small rallies,door-to-door campaigns etc, people wonder.

curious replacement?

These days everywhere at the Writers’,there is the talk about the possible cabinet reshuffle. But what has surprised many is the name of land reform minister Swapan Debnath, doing the round as the replacement of Bratya Basu in the education department.
