Amid criticism over the TMC government’s handling of the Kolkata flooding situation, in which at least 11 people were killed, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday lashed out at her critics for “indulging in politics over death”, asserting that her government acted promptly and would continue to stand by the affected families.

Inaugurating the popular Suruchi Sangha Durga Puja in south Kolkata, she said: “There are always some people who only want to spread negativity and criticism. Do not listen to them. Even though I face abuse every day, I continue to work relentlessly.”

Speaking about Monday night’s torrential rain, she said: “We have suffered over the last few days because of the waters of DVC, Farakka, and their inability to dredge. Everything was overflowing, including drains. This rain was unprecedented. But Bengal, like a boat, floats through all difficulties. We were able to pump out water in six hours. What makes them file cases against the inundation and flooding of drains? Don’t they understand they boomerang? From London to Delhi, all major cities need time to recover from such heavy rainfall, floods, and inundation. We don’t do politics over death. These were unfortunate deaths,” she said, referring to petitions filed in the Calcutta High Court.

“We have constructed 500 check dams, and if they don’t dredge as soon as possible, I will take necessary steps,” she added.

Meanwhile, TMC MP and CM’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, held a closed-door meeting with former Kolkata mayor Sovan Chatterjee, sparking speculation over his return to active politics.

The meeting, which lasted for nearly 50 minutes at Banerjee’s office, was also attended by Chatterjee’s aide Baishakhi Banerjee.

Baishakhi Banerjee said Chatterjee’s return to active politics was only a matter of time.

A leader close to the TMC national general secretary, considered the number two in the party, said the meeting was “more of a pre-Durga Puja meet”.

The development comes days after unprecedented rainfall left large parts of Kolkata waterlogged, triggering public anger over civic management.
