As many as 125 of the 144 newly-elected councillors of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), belonging to Trinamool Congress, Congress and BJP took oath on Tuesday, while the remaining four TMC and 15 Left Front councillors would be sworn in on Wednesday.
Mala Roy, who had recently defected to TMC from Congress, has been nominated as the chairperson of the civic body while Sovan Chatterjee’s name has been proposed as mayor for the second consecutive time.
Chatterjee and Roy will take their respective oaths on Friday at Town Hall, in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Members Mayor in Council (MMiC) would also sworn in on the same day.
Sources said while present MMiCs Debabrata Majumder, Debasish Kumar, Atin Ghosh and Susanta Ghosh would retain their portfolios, Iqbal Ahmed would replace Farzana Alam as deputy mayor.
Chatterjee told mediapersons that the new board will work even harder to give the people more and better civic amenities. Though no single party has got 10 per cent of the seats required to qualify as an Opposition, he said views of other parties will be taken
seriously.
Mamata will meet all the TMC councillors from across the state at a programme in Nazrul Mancha on Wednesday to discuss the party’s roadmap and brief them about their duties and responsibilities.
