Students of Jogmaya Devi College, who are currently on an excursion in south India, were allegedly harassed by some drunk youths who boarded the Shalimar Express in which they were travelling at Ernakulum in Kerala last night. Sixty second-year students from the Geography department have been on a tour to south India for the last 15 days.

Gargi Nath, the principal of Jogmaya Devi College, came to know about the incident around 10.30 pm yesterday when panic-stricken students called her. The students are being accompanied by three teachers and two non-teaching staff. College authorities said the students have lodged an FIR.

“The students said that at Ernakulum, some drunk youths got into the train and misbehaved with them. When the teachers tried to object, they were beaten up,” said Nath. Sources said the students were harassed at two places — Ernakulum and Palghat — and the RPF was not of much help.

The principal called up state Higher Education Minister Sudarshan Roychowdhury and Trinamool MP and Union Minister of State for Urban Development Sougata Roy and told them about the incident. “They will be arriving here tomorrow. At present, they are feeling very insecure. There were only two constables in the train and the railway officials did not help in any way,” said Nath, adding details would be ascertained once the students return.
