Leader of Opposition in state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday said Jadavpur University (JU) had become a “hub of anti-socials” and that a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delegation would be visiting the family of the undergraduate student who died on the varsity campus after falling from his hostel balcony last week.

Addressing a meet organised by the BJP Yuva Morcha outside the JU campus, Adhikari said a group of 15 BJP MLAs would visit the house of the deceased student in Nadia district on Friday and meet his family.

“If his parents give us permission, we will fight the legal battle on their behalf. The bereaved family has our full sympathy,” he said.

Hitting out at West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu, the Nandigram MLA said, “On Tuesday, the second phase of the Monsoon session will commence in the state Assembly. The state education minister will be there and will have to face us in the House. He will have to make statements on why such an incident took place at JU. If he fails to do this then he should resign from his post.”

The BJP leader claimed that there are three four small organisations in JU that were acting as the “B-team” of the ruling Trinamool Congress. “These outfits had organised a ‘no vote to BJP’ campaign during the 2021 state Assembly polls. We have to uproot these parties from Jadavpur. This place has become a hub of anti-socials,” he said.

Reacting to Adhikari’s comments, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Santanu Sen said, “Those who did not allow installation of CCTVs inside the campus were Left outfits. The TMC did not oppose such moves. The police have arrested several people in the case. If they are indeed our party’s B team then the police would not have taken action. Suvendu Adhikari is making baseless claims to get political mileage from the situation.”

Meanwhile, an alleged clash broke out between BJP workers and some Left activities when the latter tried to show black flags to Adhikari while he was leaving the venue.  Several Left activists sustained injuries in the clash. Earlier during the day, members of various Left student organisations including the SFI and AISF, took out a protest rally from Dhakuria bus stand to JU to condemn the death of the first-year UG student.
