THE KOLKATA Police on Saturday registered an FIR against former cricketer and BJP MLA Ashok Dinda for allegedly threatening police personnel during a ‘Nabanna march’ to mark the completion of one year of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

According to sources in the Kolkata Police, Dinda is purportedly seen threatening police officers in video footage. “Mr Dinda, during the rally, threatened and verbally abused our officers on duty. He also assaulted the guard of an IAS officer. Luckily, the personnel wasn’t injured because he was wearing a helmet,” a police officer told PTI.

A senior police officer told The Indian Express, “We are still checking the video footage. If we find visuals in which any others are also threatening or misbehaving with our officers, we will file FIRs in those cases as well.”

On Saturday, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, along with other BJP MLAs including Dinda, also participated in the protest from the Park Street end.

When the march was blocked with barricades, BJP supporters tried to break the barricades and march towards Nabanna, the headquarters of the state secretariat. Some BJP leaders and MLAs got into arguments with the police personnel deployed at the spot.

As of Saturday evening, a total of six FIRs have been registered against protesters in connection with the ‘Nabanna march’, police said.
