Bangladesh to seek extradition of its nationals held in Burdwan blast

“JMB operatives were conspiring against Bangladesh using a bordering state and some like-minded fundamentalists in India. We will write to the Government of India seeking custody of Bangladeshi nationals after the NIA’s investigation is complete,” Kamal said on Saturday before he left for a seven-day visit to Australia.

Justifying the extradition demand, Kamal said, “The conspiracy was hatched against Bangladesh and explosives too were smuggled to Bangladesh. We have a legitimate right to investigate. We have heard that NIA would file the chargesheet soon. After it is filed, we would ask for the extradition.”

Stressing on the need to arrest “Boma Mizan” alias Zahidul Islam Shobhan , Kamal said, “Boma Mizan is accused in more than two dozen explosive cases here. He was an undertrial when he fled. He is a Bangladeshi absconder. Once he is arrested, he has to be extradited to Bangladesh as his trial is due here”.

He further said JMB operatives in Bengal and other eastern Indian states were funded by locals. “We are in constant touch with our counterparts in India and we would send a report to the Indian government soon in this regard,” he said.

Kamal insisted that the Bangladesh government is “committed to stop inter-country criminal activities”. “We have assured Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that we would not allow the bordering areas of the two countries to be used for terrorist activities. And we would fully cooperate with the Indian government all aspect to control such activities,” he added.

He also raised the issue of extradition of Noor Hossain, a murder accused in Bangladesh, arrested from DumDum last year. Hossain is accused in seven murder cases in Bangladesh’s Naryanganj district.

NIA sources said so far they have one Bangladeshi national, Sajid, and 16 JMB operatives in their custody.
