West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday received Bangladesh’s newly appointed High Commissioner to India, Md. Riaz Hamidullah, at Nabanna. The two leaders held a warm, wide-ranging discussion, a statement said, though Banerjee’s office did not disclose specific details to the media.

According to a press release from the Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner’s office in Kolkata, Banerjee asked Hamidullah to convey her greetings to Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and to the people of Bangladesh. She also expressed optimism about further strengthening the long-standing, historic relations between West Bengal and Bangladesh, highlighting that cultural ties far outweigh economic and commercial links.

This meeting marked the first courtesy call by the new Bangladesh High Commissioner to any Indian Chief Minister. West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant was also in attendance.
