Mausam Benazir Noor,27-year-old Congress MP from Malda North and niece of the late central minister A B A Ghani Khan Chowdhury, was today elected West Bengal Youth Congress president in an election marred by violence,slogan-shouting and protests.
Noor secured 1,061 votes to defeat Arindam Bhattacharjee, who got 900 votes. This is the first time that a woman has been elected Youth Congress chief. Mamata Banerjee held the post in the eighties, but she was a nominated president.
Even before the results were announced at the end of the final phase of the elections — held at Nazrul Manch in the presence of all candidates and in full view of reporters — Bhattacharjee and his supporters began to agitate in front of the stage.
Congress leaders like Vijay Inder Singla,MP from Sangrur,Punjab, who was in charge of holding the elections,Jitendra Singh,MP from Alwar,Rajasthan, and Usha Naidu,Youth Congress general secretary in charge of West Bengal and Haryana, tried to tell the protesters that they would be allowed to see every ballot, but to no avail. Singh also told Bhattacharjee that he would be disqualified if he continued to protest.
Soon after the results were declared, the stage was vandalised by lathi-wielding men.
Bhattacharjee is backed by Raigunj MP Deepa Dasmunsi, while Noor is said to be close to state party president Manas Bhuniya.
Youth Congress committees at the levels of each of the 42 Lok Sabha seats were elected today, along with the state level committee. About 2,570 electors cast their votes.
