Two Christian missionaries were booked for allegedly inciting people to change their religion in a three-day religious gathering in Kota, police said on Friday.
A case was registered under the newly-enacted Rajasthan Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act on Thursday night, they said.
The two accused, one from Delhi and the other from a local church, allegedly described the Rajasthan government as “the devil’s kingdom” and made offensive remarks against the Hindu community at a church, police said.
The FIR was lodged late Thursday night at Borkheda police station against the two priests, Arun John from Kota, who was the organiser of the event, and Chandi Varghese, who was called from New Delhi.
Videos circulating on social media show Varghese allegedly saying, “People of Rajasthan will soon be free from worshipping the devil and the reign of devil will end; God will rule in Rajasthan.”
Borkheda police station officer Devesh Bhardwaj confirmed that a case has been registered, notices issued, and an investigation is underway.
According to police, the programme took place between November 4 and 6 at Beersheba Church on Canal Road, Kota, where locals were allegedly invited under the pretext of a “spiritual discourse”. During the session, the missionaries allegedly delivered speeches encouraging religious conversion. Police have seized videos of the preogramme and screenshots from social media livestreams.
The Indian Express tried to contact Pastor Arun John, but his phone was switched off.
Ashish Sharma, Kota Convenor of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, claimed, “We have brought the incident to light and the police are investigating. Some Hindu youths reportedly proclaimed from the stage that they had been baptized.”
