The numbers on abduction of women in the state, in the NCRB’s Crime in India report 2014, reveal a disturbing trend: more than 50 per cent of victims appear to have been abducted to be forced into marriage or “illicit intercourse”.
While police statistics on kidnapping of women are not exactly representative — relatives reporting consensual elopement as abduction is common — the figures are a cause for concern.
According to police records, 4,452 women were kidnapped in Rajasthan last year. Of them, 2,365 women were abducted to be either forced into marriage or into non-consensual sex.
In terms of kidnapping, Rajasthan ranks fourth nationally, behind Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Assam.
The state does not fare too well in terms of overall numbers pertaining to crimes against women. Rajasthan reported the second highest number (3,770) of rapes in the country last year, behind Madhya Pradesh. Besides, over 6,742 women reported molestation and sexual harrasment cases in the state.
When it came to overall crimes against women, Rajasthan was third, behind only Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
The state reported 31,151 crimes against women in different categories with 91.4 per cent of them being cognizable offences.
