Former Congress MLA from Vadgam constituency Manibhai Vaghela on Sunday joined the ruling BJP in the presence of party’s Gujarat president CR Paatil.
Vaghela, who was elected from the Vadgam constituency as a Congress candidate in 2012, had to change his constituency to Idar after Congress decided to support independent candidature of Jignesh Mevani from the seat.
Vaghela joined the BJP while participating in a Vijay Vishwas Sammelan organised by BJP under the leadership of Paatil. The function was also attended by Gujarat BJP general secretary Rajni Patel, party incharge for Banaskantha district Nandaji Thakor, district BJP president Gumansinh Chauhan, Minister of State for education Kirtisinh Vaghela, BJP MLA from Deesa constituency Shashikant Pandya and former Union minister Haribhai Chaudhary.
In his resignation letter to party president Sonia Gandhi in December 2021, Manibhai expressed his grievances, including denying him party ticket from Congress bastion of Vadgam constituency in the 2017 assembly elections to support the candidature of Mevani.
Manibhai’s entry into BJP from Vadgam is considered significant as he is considered to be among top names from the BJP to fight the upcoming assembly elections.
The constituency has been in focus specially after sitting MLA Mevani was recently arrested by Assam police in connection with one of his tweets. Mevani has declared his allegiance to the Congress, which is likely to field him from the same seat on the party symbol.
Talking to mediapersons after joining the BJP, Manibhai said the decision to field a candidate on all seats is being taken by the party leadership. He added that whether the party gives him a ticket or not, he will work to make BJP victorious.
