Wheat upma, tomato rice, pongal-sambar and much more: Food served at Tamil Nadu prisons undergo changes

Based on recommendations by an expert committee, the food served to prisoners in Tamil Nadu has undergone a change and the Department of Prisons and Correctional Services launched a modified diet on Monday.

In April, Minister for Law, Courts, and Prisons S Regupathy announced that the has government constituted a committee comprising deputy secretaries to government, home and finance department officials, prison officials and nutrition experts from Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital to review the change of the scale and the pattern of the diet given to prisoners.

It was said the committee considered the changes by comparing it with the existing diet and with other state prisons and submitted its recommendations.

The new inclusions would entail an additional expenditure of Rs 26 crore annually to the government.

Minister Regupathy launched the scheme as a part of the centenary celebrations of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.


As a part of the new menu, prisoners will now get items like wheat upma, pongal-sambar, ragi upma, tomato rice, chapati, pudina rice, egg, lemon rice and idli-sambar for breakfast over rice gruel or porridge.

Rice, rasam, vegetable curry, curd, kesari, ghee and bananas will be served to both A class prisoners and B class prisoners for lunch. Chicken will be served thrice (Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday) to A class prisoners and twice (Sunday, Wednesday) to B class convicted prisoners.

In the evening, the prisoners will be provided tea along with any variety of sundal. Rice, sambar, chapati, vegetable curry and channa curry will be served for dinner.
