In light of the recent murder of a Delhi University (DU) student,Radhika Tanwar, and a spurt of rape cases in the Capital, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday organised a public hearing on ‘Security concerns and women’s safety’ at Delhi University (South Campus).

NCW chairperson Dr Girija Vyas said they have appealed to the Centre to pass the Sexual Harassment Bill-509 (b) of the Indian Penal Code with an alteration in the definition of harassment. “We have been focusing on strengthening five major areas in women’s safety — the laws governing security forces,a prompt police force, awareness programmes, involvement of the civil society and role of the media,” she said.

More than 100 students from colleges such as ANDC,Dyal Singh,RLA,Kamla Nehru and Jesus and Mary College (JMC) participated in the event. They demanded police chowkis in front of colleges, more women constables and CCTV cameras at the Satya Niketan overbridge, among other things. The students of JMC suggested exclusive buses for women inside the university.

Trishala Shandilya,a JMC student, said,“We want women police constables in front of our college as we feel comfortable speaking to them, rather than male constables.”

The purpose of the hearing, according to DSP (South) H G S Dhaliwal, was “to make everyone aware of police facilities so they make use of PCR vehicles more efficiently, and are made aware of emergency numbers”.

DU Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Singh said,“Now that we have had this public hearing,we will work towards implementing the suggestions.”

The seven-member panel included Dr Girija Vyas, the DU Vice-Chancellor and DCP (South) H G S Dhaliwal. Parag Sharma,a student of Venkateshwara College, and Shashank Shekhar Singh from
