A day after Sakshi Ahuja, 34, was electrocuted outside the New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS), her family members are yet to come to terms with the loss.

At her Preet Vihar home, her in-laws and other family members spoke about how Sakshi – a school teacher and a freelance architect – was “everyone’s friend.”

Said her mother-in-law Kailash: “She was like my daughter. Everyone loved her. I remember when I underwent a surgery. She was the only one who pushed me for treatment of my legs… What will I do without her? How will I take care of the children? We want strict action…” The family demanded a fair enquiry against the officers concerned for their alleged negligence with regard to electric poles and waterlogged streets. The Delhi Police have not made any arrests in the case yet.

On Sunday, Sakshi, accompanied by her two children, sister and parents, was supposed to catch the Vande Bharat Express to Chandigarh. While walking towards the entrance of the NDLS station, she slipped and fell near an electric pole. Police said she got electrocuted as the road was waterlogged and a bunch of wires on the pole were exposed.

The family said Sakshi suffered for 10-20 minutes as nobody came to help her as the children – Raghav (10) and Ananya (6) – watched their mother collapse. “Raghav told me Sakshi’s leg got stuck in some wire and she fell in the puddle. Raghav also suffered shock. He was holding his sister while his aunt was calling people for help and struggling to get an ambulance,” said Kailash.

Sakshi’s husband Ankit, who works as an engineer with a Japanese firm, said, “My daughter was holding her mother when two locals pulled her and saved her life. But, help for Sakshi came later. This could’ve happened to anyone. We all take trains.. .”

“We are fighting for justice because we don’t want this to happen with anyone. We were a happy family…Now, we are all broken…,” said Sakshi’s sister-in-law.

Delhi Police spokesperson Suman Nalwa said, “We have registered a case. The site has been examined by forensic teams. We have written to CEA (Central Electricity Authority) to inspect the spot and also wrote to the division railway manager. We are waiting for their reply.”

Deepak Kumar, Chief PRO of Northern Railways, said, “From preliminary investigation, it seems this incident happened due to accumulation of water due to rain.” He said there was a “current leakage from cable due to insulation failure” and it doesn’t show deficiency in railways’s working system.
