Self-styled ‘godman’ Virender Dev Dixit, who is accused in cases of rape and mistreatment of his disciples at his ashram in Delhi’s Rohini, died in 2023, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told a Delhi court.

After learning of his demise, the CBI informed Special Judge Sanjay Khanagwal of Rouse Avenue Court and sought abatement of the trial.

“The present application has been received from filing Branch, RADC, Rouse Avenue, New Delhi. It be checked and registered… This is an application filed by the CBI for abatement of trial proceedings in the present case,” said Judge Khanagwal in an order dated September 24, posting the matter on October 15.

According to sources, information of his death was received only in January 2025 and was confirmed recently.

Dixit has been on the run ever since the CBI registered cases against him in 2017 following orders from the Delhi High Court.

In 2018, an Interpol Blue Notice was issued against him. The CBI had also issued two lookout circulars against him on January 22, 2018, and February 22, 2019. It had announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for providing any information about him.

Four FIRs had been registered in connection with his ashram, Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya — two against Dixit alleged rape and forced confinement. One was against three devotees for obstructing a team from inspecting the ashram on December 19, 2017, and one was by a woman inmate against her own brother, accusing him of rape.

Dixit also had four rape cases registered against him in Farrukhabad, but he was acquitted in all of these.

The Rohini ashram was raided on December 19, 2017, prompted by a Delhi HC order on a PIL filed by an NGO, Foundation for Social Empowerment. The NGO alleged several minors and women were being illegally confined, and had referred to a missing girl from Pilani and a woman from Telangana, pursuing a PhD from the US.
The raid had found women and girls confined in “animal-like” conditions and more than 40 girls were rescued.
