The Delhi police arrested two men who allegedly cheated ‘high-profile’ people by issuing them fake appointment letters from government bodies, including central ministries, officials on Saturday said.
According to the police, the arrested identified as Khatri Iqbal Ahamad, 50, a resident of Gujarat, and Himanshu Pandey, 35, of Uttar Pradesh, duped people on the pretext of appointing them as board members of the National Medical Commission, the police said. It was found that the duo has allegedly been running a fake government job racket along with other associates, the police said.
The police took action based on a complaint by Chandan Kumar, Under Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, alleging that somebody has been forging letters issued by the ministry.
Special Commissioner of Police (crime) Ravindra Yadav said that the police arrested Ahamad from Gujarat’s Vadodara and Pandey from UP’s Lucknow.
According to the police, the forged government order mentioned that the tenure of National Medical Commission chairman Suresh Chandra Sharma has ended in January and Dr Suresh K Patel, a member of Gujarat Medical Council, has been appointed as the new chairman and he can take charge on any date between April 3 and April 10.
Chandan Kumar pointed out in the complaint that the file number mentioned in the said letter, purportedly issued by the ministry, does not exist, and no such order has been issued by the ministry. The police too said that the letter was fake and registered a case under relevant sections of cheating.
In 2021, they were arrested by the Gujarat Police in a similar case of cheating and forging appointment letters, the police said. They later planned on targeting high-profile people, officials said.
