“The last six months were a struggle but today we got some relief. But I will celebrate only when my three brothers (Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain) are out of jail…,” said Anita, wife of AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh who was granted bail on Tuesday — following six months in jail — by the Supreme Court in the excise policy case.
Readying documents before heading to court, she added, “I am thankful to the court… there was a positive feeling today that he will get bail… Satya ki jeet hoti hai… He will be released from the hospital tomorrow afternoon and will come home by 3-4 pm.”
Meanwhile, Singh’s mother Radhika has a menu planned for her son’s homecoming today —nothing spicy or oily, owing to his health, but his favourite dal, chawal, and roti. “He will get to eat home-cooked food after so long… Bata nahi sakti kitni khush hoon main aaj… My son is coming out after suffering in jail for six months in a false case… I will be happier if my other sons who are in jail in this false case get relief,” she added.
Scores of party workers including MLAs Somnath Bharti, Dilip Pandey, Akhilesh Pati Tripathi and MCD councillors gathered at Singh’s North Avenue home as soon as the news broke.
Addressing a press conference later in the day, AAP Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said, “… Today is a very big day for the entire country and our democracy. The Supreme Court’s decision has given hope… by giving bail to Sanjay Singh ji. Now, a leader is coming out to save Democracy.”
Minister Atishi said, “Sanjay ji’s bail today has shown that in the end truth wins. Aap satya ko daba sakte hai, par hara nahi sakte… The ED could not show the money trail in court… In the last two years, the ED has deputed 500 officers and conducted several raids but it found nothing, not even a penny from the homes of these leaders.”
AAP leader Jasmine Shah, who also addressed the press conference, said, “His bail is not just a victory for AAP but for every citizen who believes in the Constitution and truth.”
Meanwhile, the lane outside Singh’s home echoed with slogans of “Sanjay Bhaiya, Sanjay Bhaiya aane wale hain, tent ki booking kardi, maala arrangement ho gaya”, “Satyameva jayate”, and “Satya ki jeet” as party workers celebrated.
With a smile on his face, Sanjeev Singh, a businessman who came from Greater Noida said, “It feels like the party now has a ray of hope with his bail… I met (Singh) at a public meeting five years ago and he treated me with respect and talked to me humbly like a friend… that’s when I joined the party.”
His words found resonance with several other workers. Sunil Singh, AAP’s Laxmi Nagar district ward president, said, “Ab tak lag raha tha ki kon leader bolega, kon sabko sath jodega… par ab chinta door hat gayi, bhaiya aane wale hai… Now, election campaigning will begin in full swing.”
A party worker from East Delhi, who shares the same name as the Rajya Sabha MP, said, “… he is the only leader who is the most approachable… he always keeps his door open for workers… even when he was in jail, his wife welcomed us and heard our problems.”
