Former Trilokpuri MLA Sunil Vaid (47), who fell unconscious on stage during a rally on December 8, died of a brain haemorrhage on Wednesday. His friends at the rally said he was in the middle of telling a joke when he collapsed.
Vaid’s friends said he was a soft-spoken and simple man who lived in a resettlement colony in Trilokpuri even after becoming an MLA.
His friend Virender Sachdeva, district president of Mayur Vihar, said Vaid had been pursuing a PhD as he wanted to be “educated”.
“He always used to say that he wanted to pursue a PhD because not many in his community got a higher education,” Sachdeva said.
A former Apollo hospital employee, Vaid started his political career in 2001 after the BJP appointed him as mandal president. In 2003, he fought his first election as MLA and lost.
In 2008, he again contested the elections and won. In the recent election he lost to an AAP candidate. The AAP had alleged that Vaid played a role in instigating the recent Trilokpuri riots. “Had he been involved, police would have taken action against him,” Sachdeva said.
Vaid is survived by his wife and two children.
