A woman lawyer died by suicide in Noida after allegedly being blackmailed with intimate videos by a man who had purportedly promised to marry her, police said. The incident occurred on November 3, and the accused–a lawyer–was arrested the same day, officers said.
According to a complaint filed by the woman’s father, a resident of Noida, the deceased had been working with the accused, officers added.
The accused, originally from Patna, Bihar, resides in Noida, police said.
The complaint alleges that the accused initiated a relationship with the woman under the false pretext of marriage and later began blackmailing her using intimate videos. “He repeatedly exploited my daughter and threatened to make the videos viral if she tried to end contact with him,” the father told police.
He further stated that when the family confronted the accused on November 3 at around 3.30 pm, the accused allegedly issued fresh threats and abused them. “Shortly after the altercation, my daughter was found hanging in her room. We rushed her to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead,” the complaint read.
According to officers, the father also told police he suspected his daughter was pregnant and that the accused had previously given her pills to terminate the pregnancy, based on information shared by his elder daughter.
Following the incident, the accused allegedly attempted to flee but was apprehended and handed over to police, officers said.
Talking to The Indian Express, a senior police officer of the area said that the accused was arrested and had been sent to jail after an FIR was registered with the police. “They had been in a live-in relationship for over 2 years but later he refused to marry her….”
We are yet to verify the accusations tied to pregnancy, the officer added.
An FIR has been registered under sections 108 (abetment of suicide), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and 351 (breach of peace) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), police said.
