Teacher representatives from several state associations such as Delhi, Aligarh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Haryana and West Bengal staged a dharna against the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) outside the University Grants Commission (UGC) office on Friday.
Former Congress MLA from Delhi Kiran Walia and CPI (M) central committee member Nilotpal Basu were also present.
Teachers had gathered under the banners of All India Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisation (AIFUCTO) and Federation of Central University Teachers’ Associations (FEDCUTA). Several teachers’ unions spoke at the dharna and questioned the intention behind the move.

“When CBCS speaks of migration, it surely cannot mean public-to-public institution transfer because those are always full. That means students will be forced to migrate to private universities and pay exorbitant fees which will eliminate an entire section which cannot pay much for its education,” Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisation secretary Tapati Mukhopadhay said.
“We have been fighting against CBCS since last year as it will take away the autonomy of individual colleges and universities, because only 20 per cent leeway is being given to them to make changes to the syllabi,” Aligharh Muslim University Teachers’ Association (AMUTA) member Aftab Alam said.
Walia too expressed her opposition. “The present government is dismantling universities and the democratic structure in a draconian and high-handed manner. Also, there is no clarity on what it is,” she said.
