The number of chikungunya and malaria cases recorded in Delhi between January and October 4 this year has reached 75 and 431, respectively– the highest in the last five years during the same period, according to civic body data. This comes amid the indefinite protest by Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) staff responsible for checking mosquito breeding entering its second week.

While 14 new cases of chikungunya were reported last week, 60 new malaria cases were registered over the same period. Meanwhile, dengue — another major vector-borne disease — continues to surge in Delhi, with 81 new cases recorded last week. With this addition, the total number of dengue cases since January has risen to 840.

Delhi Cantonment has reported the highest number of cases at 94, followed by the Central Zone with 89 cases. Meanwhile, 122 new dengue patients from the last week remain untraced.

MCD’s Multi-Tasking Staff, which includes Domestic Mosquito Breeding Checkers and Contractual Field Workers, has been demanding standardised pay, permanent employment status for long-serving workers as well as medical and earned leave benefits.
