A six-year-old boy suffered severe injuries allegedly after being mauled by a pet pitbull in Northwest Delhi’s Prem Nagar on Sunday evening, said police.
The dog owner has been arrested after an FIR was registered in the matter while the condition of the boy continues to be critiacal.
Officers said the child was playing outside his residence when the dog ran out from a neighbour’s house and attacked him, leaving him bleeding on the street.
The incident was reported to Prem Nagar police station at 5:38 pm via a PCR call.
According to officers, the child was playing in the lane near his house in Vinay Enclave when the pitbull belonging to Rajesh Pal (50) allegedly lunged at him without provocation. Pal, a tailor by profession, lives in the same neighbourhood. Police said the boy’s right ear was bitten off during the attack, and he received multiple deep wounds before neighbours and family members managed to pull the dog away.
The boy’s parents rushed him to BSA Hospital in Rohini, where doctors treated him before referring him to another hospital. The child was later shifted to Safdarjung Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
At the spot, police learnt that the dog had been brought home around one-and-a-half years ago by Pal’s son Sachin, who is presently lodged in jail in connection with a case of attempted murder registered last year. Police collected the boy’s medical report from BSA Hospital and recorded the statement of the victim’s father. Based on his complaint, a case under sections 291 (negligent conduct with respect to an animal) and 125(b) (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at Prem Nagar police station and Rajesh Pal has since been arrested.
Municipal officials also intervened after the police informed them of the attack. A senior MCD officer said that the Rohini Zone team responded to the case on Monday. “We have shifted the pitbull permanently to Sonadi Animal Care Centre, an ABC (Animal Birth Control) centre in Najafgarh and it won’t be released back,” the official also said.
