Sheila ad campaign case: Court asks police to submit status report on probe

A city court on Wednesday directed Delhi Police to submit a status report in the probe into alleged misappropriation of funds by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in an advertisement campaign ahead of the 2008 elections.

A city court on Wednesday directed Delhi Police to submit a status report in the probe into alleged misappropriation of funds by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in an advertisement campaign ahead of the 2008 elections.

BJP leader Vijender Gupta had earlier filed a complaint against Dikshit seeking registration of an FIR on the ground that she had misused public finds and government machinery to publish advertisements during the 2008 election campaign.

Gupta’s counsel,Ajay Burman, requested the court for further investigation into the matter since they did not have independent access to sensitive information in the case as Dikshit was the Chief minister and the minister in-charge for information and publicity at that time.

In May,Lokayukta Justice Manmohan Sarin had indicted Dikshit on Gupta’s complaint for the misappropriation of funds in the case and recommended to President Pranab Mukherjee that Dikshit be advised to reimburse Rs 11 crore spent on advertisements.

Citing from the Lokayukta report,Burman claimed that a probe should be directed since a prima facie case of misappropriation can be made against Dikshit. He said charges against Dikshit be framed for criminal breach of trust under Section 409 of the Indian Penal Code and criminal misconduct under Section 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Justice Narottam Kaushal has directed the police to file a status report and fixed the matter for August 8.
