H G S Dhaliwal said over Rs 2 crore in cash was stolen and the police suspect an insider was involved.

Police sources said a staff member from the office complained about the theft. Police found almirah boxes, where the money was kept, broken when they reached the spot.

Dhaliwal said,“All the boxes in which money was kept were broken and the rest were not touched. This suggests an insider who knew where the money was kept was involved. We are, however, probing it from every possible angle.”

Sources said this is one of the major cases of burglary in the city considering the amount robbed.

Police officers added they are questioning the staff and are checking the duty roster. “It is not easy to hide such a huge amount of money and we have deputed several teams to probe the matter,” a senior police officer said. “We do have some leads and around twelve people have been questioned. We are hopeful of a result soon,” he added.

Senior police officers said fingerprints and other samples have been lifted from the crime scene and sent for forensic examination.
