Delhi gets new Chief Secretary — AGMUT cadre officer Rajeev Verma takes charge on October 1

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Sunday appointed 1992-AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) cadre IAS officer Rajeev Verma as Delhi’s new Chief Secretary. He will assume charge from October 1.

“With the approval of the Competent Authority, Rajeev Verma is hereby transferred from Chandigarh to Delhi and posted as Chief Secretary, GNCTD ( Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi), with effect from October 1, 2025, or from whichever is later the date of joining,” read the order issued by MHA.

Verma, who holds an M Tech degree from IIT, will replace Dharmendra, who took charge as Delhi’s Chief Secretary last September. He retires this month.

Verma has been serving as the Chief Secretary of Chandigarh since last year. Earlier, he was posted as the Chief Secretary of Puducherry.

A native of Uttar Pradesh, he also served in the Delhi government as the Finance and Revenue Secretary between 2018 and 2022. He served as the Principal Commissioner of Housing and Urban Affairs with the Delhi Development Authority from 2017 to 2018.

He has also held key posts in Delhi’s Transport department and served at the rank of secretary and additional secretary-level at other departments in the Capital.

“He is a very nice officer and goes by the rulebook and also holds a practical approach,” said a senior official in the Finance department of Delhi.

Over his three-decade-long bureaucratic career, Verma has also served in other key posts in the Central government. He was Joint Secretary of Defence from 2013 to 2017. He was also posted in the Power Ministry and Health and Family Welfare Ministry.

After assuming the new post, Verma will be heading the city’s administration and will oversee the functioning of the Delhi government and all departments. He will oversee key projects of the new BJP government in the Capital related to rejuvenation of Yamuna river, excise policy and others linked to infrastructure and traffic management.
