Educational institutes must play lead role in research to leverage fourth industrial revolution: President Droupadi Murmu

President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday said that educational institutions must play a leading role in research and innovation to navigate the technological advancements of the fourth industrial revolution.

She was addressing the fifth convocation at J C Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA, in Faridabad, Haryana, where 1,536 students and researchers who completed their degrees in 2023 were conferred degrees. Among the recipients, 874 were boys and 662 girls.

After awarding 13 PhD degrees, two medals and distributing certificates to the students, President Murmu hailed the significant representation of women among the achievers, with 43 per cent of the degree recipients being girls. She expressed her desire to see an improvement in the ratio in future.

Among the awardees, there were 998 graduates, 525 postgraduates, and 13 PhDs.


The President praised the university’s efforts to promote research, including the introduction of the J C Bose Young Scientist Award and provisions for seed money for research.

She acknowledged the contribution of the institution in making youth skilled and self-reliant for over five decades and highlighted the impressive list of alumni who are excelling in various fields and supporting students financially and through mentorship.

President Murmu spoke of the importance of making the alumni association’s contribution strong and effective.

Lauding the university’s initiative to implement the National Education Policy (NEP), President Murmu said the NEP focuses on promoting research and a scientific approach, with an emphasis on holistic education, the inclusion of research and internships in graduate courses, and the establishment of the National Research Foundation to promote quality research.

She also commended the university’s initiatives to ink pact with industrial and academic institutions and the establishment of Centres of Excellence in collaboration with multinational companies.

The event was presided over by Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatraya who is the Chancellor of the University.

Dattatreya lauded the significant participation of women researchers in the convocation, highlighting their growing presence and contributions in the field of technology.

Vice Chancellor Professor Sushil Kumar Tomar was also present.
