Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Barkha Singh has approached police after receiving an extortion letter via mail from a person who claimed to be a lieutenant of a gangster.
In the letter, the extortionist threatened the family and allegedly demanded Rs 2 crore as “protection money”, police sources said.
On the basis of Singh’s complaint, a case has been registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code at Safdurjung police station of South Delhi. The anti-extortion unit (AEU) of the Crime Branch along with the special task force (STF) of South district are looking into this matter.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South district), Prem Nath said that a complaint had been received and “appropriate lawful action” would be taken.
Police sources said that Singh received the letter by post on March 14. It was sent to her home in Safdarjung Enclave area from a person in Bihar. “In the letter, the accused asked her to give
Rs 2 crore as protection money,” sources added.
The letter also claimed that two henchmen of a gangster were “interested” in Singh’s Lucknow house.
Barkha Singh confirmed that she had received such a letter. “After receiving the letter, I approached the police and requested them to investigate the matter,” she said.
In her complaint, Singh told police: “As chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women, I have been dealing with great number of cases pertaining to women in distress and have also raided number of places to secure trafficked women and children. In view of the severe seriousness of the matter, I will be extremely grateful if I am accorded permanent security for the safety and security of me and my family with immediate effect.”
