From now on, passengers will be allowed to carry two sealed bottles of liquor on all metro lines, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said Friday.
A review committee comprising officials from the DMRC and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) revised the list of prohibited items which banned carrying alcohol earlier. Passengers could carry alcohol only on the Airport Express Line.
The rule to not allow carrying alcohol in the Metro has been at the centre of debates for many years. However, consumption of alcohol and/or being drunk within metro premises is still a punishable offence.
DCP (Metro) G Ram Gopal Naik said that according to provisions of the DMRC Act, metro commuters can be fined Rs 200 for creating nuisance of any kind. “If a person is found to be drinking at a public space, he or she can be booked under the Excise Act and under sections of the Indian Penal Code…,” said the DCP.
A senior CISF official said that they will comply with the guidelines and rules laid down by the Delhi Metro and will keep a check on those flouting the same.
A senior metro official said that review meetings, including the one allowing sealed liquor bottles inside metro, is carried out on a regular basis.
Metro passengers are requested to maintain proper decorum while travelling, the DMRC said. In case, any passenger is found behaving in an indecent manner under the influence of alcohol, suitable action will be taken against him or her under the relevant provisions of law, officials said.
