To tackle the water crisis in Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government on Tuesday formed “quick response teams” to monitor the main water distribution network and ensure there are no leakages.

Water and Revenue Minister Atishi posted on X on Wednesday, “Since Delhi is facing an acute water shortage in the heat wave, measures are being taken to prevent the wastage of any water…”

Special teams of additional district magistrates (ADMs) and sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) have been deployed to monitor the main water distribution network to ensure that water is not wasted due to leakages, she added.

She directed Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar to ensure that all pipelines are monitored and inspected. Any leakage must be repaired within 12 hours, she said.

The formation of quick response teams comes at a time when the AAP government is engaged in a tussle with Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, who had advised the ministers not to get into a “pointless blame game” over Delhi’s water crisis and to “resolve the issue amicably with neighbouring states”.

Atishi wrote to the chief secretary that the ADM/SDM level officers will be deployed in each zone, along with a team of tehsildars and other officials who will act as ‘quick response teams’ for the provision of water tankers and resolution of water-related complaints.

Atishi directed the chief secretary to ensure that special teams monitor and inspect the main water distribution network. This includes oversight from water sources to our water treatment plants, as well as from the treatment plants to the primary underground reservoirs (UGRs).

At this time of water shortage, not a single drop of water can be wasted, she wrote.

She also directed the chief secretary to submit a daily report of all the inspections by every quick response team to her office by 5 pm every day.
