Twenty-two half-burnt passports of India and neighbouring countries were found inside the premises of a high-rise society in Noida’s Sector 151 on Thursday. Police said they are trying to ascertain who did this and why.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Greater Noida) Ashok Kumar said: “On June 1, residents of Jaypee Aman Society reported that a pile of garbage was set on fire by an unknown person behind building N-22, which was extinguished by residents, guards and the local fire team. We recovered some documents in a burnt and half-burnt condition from the garbage, in which 22 passports (4 Indian, 4 Bangladeshi, 14 Nepalese), some cheque books/passbooks, SIM cards and tenant verification documents etc. were found. Investigation in this regard is ongoing.”

However, he also said that prima facie it seems these documents are not related to any foreigner but a consultancy firm.

“As per our information, there are no foreigners living in the society. We received information that a Delhi resident used to live in a rented flat here, but he vacated about four months ago. He had opened a placement agency in Sector 6, Noida. Its instagram page says it helps people find jobs in Thailand, Malaysia etc. However when we went to the location, we found that this company had been closed,” said ADCP (Greater Noida) Ashok Kumar. The officer further said that the police are trying to contact the person and the company.

Meanwhile, on the directions of Gautam Buddha Nagar Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh, the district police is conducting a verification drive to check visas and passports of foreigners living in the district.

During a joint operation by Surajpur police station and the Local Intelligence Unit, 23 foreign nationals (15 men and 8 women) from African countries living in Alstonia Society of Greater Noida were arrested Friday. Officials said it was found that the 23 foreign nationals did not have valid documents to live in India. Police also said they were disturbing public order by causing obstruction during government work.

Similarly, 16 foreign nationals (13 men and 3 women) were arrested by Beta 2 police station Thursday. Police claimed they were living illegally in Casa Grande Society. They have been booked under Section 14 of The Foreigners Act, 1946, and sent to jail.
