Self-styled godman Chaitanyananda has been arrested in a separate case of using fake number plates —including diplomatic ones — on two of his vehicles, a Delhi Police officer said. According to the officer, Chaitanyananda, who is already lodged in Tihar after being booked in a separate case in August for allegedly sexually harassing 19 women at Sri Sharda Institute of Indian Management (SRIISM) in Vasant Kunj, was arrested on the direction of the court.
The officer said that Chaitanyananda used nine different number plates, including a blue fake diplomatic plate, on two of his cars.
“He used a Volvo and a BMW SUV, and used fake plates on them. He was arrested from Tihar jail,” the officer said.
“We will ask for police custody if it’s needed,” DCP (South West) Amit Goel said.
The court has earlier dismissed his anticipatory bail plea in a forgery case related to the alleged misappropriation of funds from a South Delhi-based institute while he was serving as its director,
According to police, over 18 accounts and 28 fixed deposits in the name of a trust set up by Chaitanyananda – which had around Rs 8 crore in them – have been frozen so far.
He was the former chairman and director of the SRIISM, which is run by the Karnataka-based Sri Sri Jagadguru Shankaracharya Mahasamsthanam Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetham.
