A student of a private college in Greater Noida was found dead and another injured inside a room of their hostel on Tuesday, police said. Officers said that though a gun was recovered from the room, it was not clear who shot whom. Each of them sustained a bullet injury on the right side of the head, they said.

The deceased has been identified as Deepak Kumar (22), an MBA student of BIMTECH, Greater Noida, who hailed from Andhra Pradesh. Devansh Chauhan (23), a PGDM student of the same college, has been admitted to a hospital, police said. He hails from Agra.

An investigating officer said that Devansh is the son of a retired officer of the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force. “It seems that he had brought his father’s licensed personal revolver to show to his friend. He has been shot on the right side of his head, and his chances of survival are slim,” said the officer.

Police said doctors have been unable to operate on the youth owing to the nature of the injuries.

The investigating officer also said that no complaint was made in the case.

“We do not know who shot whom. This is a matter of investigation. Two empty cartridges were recovered from the spot,” the officer said.
The Knowledge Park police were informed about the incident on Tuesday morning.

“A team reached the spot. The security guard said he informed the hostel warden after he heard someone groan in one of the rooms. The warden tried to open the main gate, but failed,” said Sudheer Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police, Greater Noida.

The officer said that the warden then went to the rear side of the hostel, climbed to the balcony of the said hostel room, broke the glass of a window, and opened the door.

The warden spotted the students lying on the ground, “bleeding profusely”, police said.

Sudheer Kumar said the students were said to be good friends.

“We have informed their families and seized the revolver used in the incident,” he added.
