A couple lying unconscious in the bathroom of their flat, covered in blood with a knife beside them — this is what a team of policemen saw as they reached a house and forcibly opened the main door, which was locked, in South Delhi’s Munirka village on Sunday night after receiving a PCR call about an alleged domestic dispute, officers said on Monday.
Both of them had injuries on their necks. The woman had a deep cut to the back of her neck that caused profuse bleeding, said police. They were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre where the woman was declared dead while the man is undergoing treatment, said police. “The bathroom door was also locked from inside. Both of them were found bleeding from their necks,” said a senior police officer.
The woman has been identified as Thempi Khongsai, who hailed from Senapati in Manipur and worked as a beautician, officers said. Her husband, Thangjam Viney Meitei, who hails from Moirang in Manipur, runs a grocery store in Munirka village.
According to police, the couple had been married for three years. Police said that the couple allegedly had a fight on Sunday night after which Khongsai called her father. Khongsai’s father called the couple’s landlady, asking her to check on them. The police team reached the house after the landlady’s daughter dialled up 112, officers said. According to the police, Khongsai had called her father to tell him that there had been a fight and that she had been injured in it. “She requested him to get help,” said the officer.
Premwati (74), the landlady, runs a small grocery store on the ground floor of the building where the couple lived. According to her, her daughter received a call from Khongsai’s father at around 8 pm. “She told me that her father was worried because they had fought. I went and knocked on their door several times. The man answered from behind the door that he was busy. When I told him that it was me, he said he was in the bathroom. I went and knocked again after ten minutes and heard no answer,” she said.
She added that this time round she peeked into the one-room apartment through the window and saw no one inside. “The lights were on and the door was locked from inside…her father had said she was at home so I felt odd that no one was inside. I had not seen anyone come out either. That’s when I told my daughter to call the police,” said Premwati.
Khongsai’s husband has not been questioned since he is still under treatment and is not yet fit to provide a statement, said police.
Police said that crime and forensics teams have been called to the spot for inspection and collection of evidence. Khongsai’s post-mortem was conducted on Monday evening and police are awaiting the analysis.
Officers said they are also awaiting medical opinion on whether Khongsai’s husband’s wound was self-inflicted or a result of the victim’s attempt to self defend.
