Last but not the least

Three I-League spots up for grabs as Division Two draws to a close

To be sure, permutations and combinations don’t make Salgaocar SC’s fifth and final round of match against Shillong Lajong FC in Faridabad on Saturday a must-win. However, the Goans, who have seven points from four matches and are joint second in the points table, would like to leave nothing to chance in their bid to seal an I-League spot for the next season.

Still, the task would be easier said than done as in Lajong, they face the best team in the tournament thus far. Lajong have already made the grade — and,in the process, the history — with nine points from four matches. In the last match, they thrashed Pune FC 2-0 to become the first outfit from North East to qualify for the I-League.

While their tactics have been defensive mostly, revolving around Eduardo da Silva,Salgaocar coach Stanley Rozario will have to formulate a different game plan against Lajong.

Meanwhile in Gurgaon, another heavyweight will be eyeing one of the three I-League spots up for grabs on Saturday. Like Salgaocar,ONGC have seven points, but they face a desperate opponent in Viva (six points) who are also aiming for an outright win to advance.

While Viva enjoy a better goal difference than Pune FC,who also have six points, the latter are playing the weakest opposition in the tournament,SESA FA at the Ambedkar Stadium in the Capital.
