The Shahdara Bar Association at Karkardooma District Court issued a notice on Friday barring entry to all police personnel under the court’s jurisdiction, following a series of complaints from advocates regarding disrespectful and unprofessional behaviour by officers. The move forms part of the lawyers’ protest against alleged misconduct and the “arrogant attitude” of police personnel posted at stations within the court’s jurisdiction.
In the notice, the Bar Association stated that numerous members had reported incidents of police misbehaviour that “affront the dignity and decorum of the legal fraternity.” The decision to take a collective stand was prompted by a recent confrontation between police personnel and a lawyer, which the Association described as “deeply concerning.”
According to the Association, the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Mandawali police station, where PCR officials allegedly misbehaved with advocate Anurag Sharma and manhandled him in front of his wife and children after he requested them to move a van parked in the middle of the road.
Furthermore, the Association alleged that police personnel confiscated Sharma’s mobile phone. “When other lawyers reached PS Mandawali, to pressurize them, a police force armed with lathis and dandas was deployed at Police Station Mandawali, lawyers were subjected to disrespectful behaviour and were threatened by the police personnel. Despite waiting for hours, no MLC (Medico-legal case) of Anurag Sharma — who was injured in the incident — was conducted by the police officials of PS Mandawali,” the notice stated.
In response, an urgent meeting of the Executive Committee of the Shahdara Bar Association was convened on Friday evening to address the grievances. Following deliberations, the Association passed a unanimous resolution barring police officials — including those attached to Nayab Courts — from entering the premises of the Karkardooma Court Complex.
The resolution stated that the decision was taken “to express protest against the behaviour and conduct of police officials” and to safeguard “the respect, dignity, and independence of the legal profession.”
The Indian Express reached out to multiple senior police officials but received no response.
