Seeking cancellation of bail granted to former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda in the airhostess suicide case, the Delhi Police on Monday informed the Delhi High Court that the medical documents submitted before the trial court regarding the health problems of Kanda’s wife were “dubious”.
According to the arguments before the court of Justice V P Vaish, the verification of the medical records of the OPD of DDU Hospital had revealed that the name on the OPD records was not that of Kanda’s wife Saraswati Devi, but a woman named Meera Devi.
Additional Solicitor General Siddharth Luthra, appearing on behalf of the Delhi government, also argued that the grant of bail had “seriously prejudiced” the trial as the lower court had granted bail even though there was “no change in circumstances”.
“There are serious apprehensions of tampering of evidence,” argued Luthra, adding that the period in custody had not been very long. “Cases which are based on documentary evidence are different. When it comes to a case where loss of life is involved, the period of custody should be looked at differently,” Luthra said. He further argued that Kanda’s conduct while out on bail was “prejudicial” to the trial.
Kanda and his associate Aruna Chadha were arrested in 2012 and are facing trial for abettment of suicide of 23-year-old former airhostess Geetika Sharma. Sharma had committed suicide in 2012 and, in her suicide note, blamed Kana and Chadha of harassing her to the point of suicide.
