Justice Manmohan takes oath as Chief Justice of Delhi High Court

On July 11 this year, the SC Collegium had recommended Justice Manmohan as Chief Justice of the Delhi HC but the decision remained pending approval with the government for over two months.

Delhi High Court Acting Chief Justice Manmohan Sunday took oath as the Delhi High Court’s Chief Justice. This comes nearly 11 months after he was designated Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi HC on November 9, 2023, following the elevation of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma to the Supreme Court.

On July 11 this year, the SC Collegium had recommended Justice Manmohan as Chief Justice of the Delhi HC but the decision remained pending approval with the government for over two months. On September 21, the Centre notified his appointment.

He is due to retire on December 16 this year.

The oath was administered by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Saxena in the presence of Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and other dignitaries at Raj Niwas.

Designated as a senior advocate by the Delhi HC on January 18, 2003, Chief Justice Manmohan was appointed as additional judge on March 13, 2008. He became a permanent judge on December 17, 2009.

As a practicing advocate, he had dealt with several high-profile matters such as the Hyderabad Nizam Jewellery Trust’s matter, Claridges Hotel dispute, among others. Son of late Delhi L-G Jagmohan, CJ Manmohan enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1987 and also served as a senior panel advocate for the Government of India in the Delhi HC and SC.

His roster presently has matters including public interest litigations, letters patent appeals, tender and cooperative societies-related writ petitions, first appeals and matters to be heard by the commercial appellate division. This will continue unchanged.
