Around 40 workers were rushed to hospitals with burn injuries following a blast in the dust collector of a spare parts manufacturing facility in the industrial area of Dharuhera in Haryana’s Rewari district around 5.45pm on Saturday, police said.

According to Dharuhera SHO Inspector Jagadeesh Chand, the incident took place at a unit by the name Lifelong India. “We will investigate the reason behind the blast and if the factory was following all the norms and safety standards,” he added. Asked if the factory had NOCs and necessary clearances, he said the industrial inspector of Haryana State Industrial & Infrastructure Development Corporation will look into it.

At the burn ward of Sir Shadi Lal Trauma Center in Rewari, Rohit Kumar (18) from Bahraich, UP, who has been working in Dharuhera for two months, said that he heard a loud explosion and felt his body was burning. “It happened close to me as the cylinder was only a few yards away. All the lights went out and we all tried to get out. I came out on my own. Around 40 people were working at the time. The room was as small and crammed with workers,” he said. Bhavesh Jha (19), the nephew of one of the workers Satyaprakash Jha (35), said his uncle was working at the factory when the incident took place. “We were informed of the incident and he was taken to the government hospital. Later, he was referred to PGIMS, Rohtak,” he said.

Rajender Kumar (19) from UP’s Ayodhya said his brother Ritesh Kumar (24) got injured in the blast. “I work at the factory, but today, I left early. I live around 500 metres away from the factory and around 5.40 pm, I heard a loud noise. I rushed to the site and got to know that the cylinder attached to the dust collector had exploded,” he said.  Dr Umesh Yadav, Associate Professor, Orthopaedics, who is also the PRO for University of Health Sciences, Rohtak, said, “All patients are stable with almost 100% superficial burns.”

The Indian Express tried to reach out to Lifelong India management but did not receive a comment.
