A man was arrested in Gurgaon’s Sector 29 Tuesday after he was allegedly caught throwing banned ‘sutli bombs’, the police said. Police are also probing if the accused is part of an organised crime syndicate as the club owners had received extortion calls from “gangsters from abroad”, said ACP (Crime) Varun Dahiya.
“We had inputs regarding such movements a few days prior and teams had prepared and were at the spot. When the incident took place, SWAT, STF, and Crime teams took action… the club owners had gotten threat calls from organised crime syndicates led by gangsters from abroad seeking ransom. We suspect the accused was a part of this,” he said.
Two live ‘sutli bombs’ and a country-made weapon were seized from the accused.
A ‘sutli bomb’ is a firecracker made of green jute twine wrapped around an explosive component. The gunpowder inside it produces gases when heated, which then tears through the twine and creates a powerful sound.
According to officials, two sutli bombs were thrown outside Human Night Club at 5.15 am on Tuesday. “The Gurgaon Police’s Crime Branch and SWAT teams, on routine duty in the area, apprehended the suspect along with the bombs and weapon. The apprehended individual has been identified as Sachin, a resident of Meerut district in Uttar Pradesh,” said an officer.
“Sutli bomb predates the current green crackers. It is banned,” the officer said.
Gurgaon Police Commissioner Vikas Arora inspected the site and directed the bomb disposal team to defuse two live sutli bombs recovered from the suspect. While a scooter and a signboard sustained minor damage in the incident, no other harm was reported to life or property, the police said.
Initial investigation reveals that the suspect was allegedly inebriated at the time of the incident. “He was either drunk or under the influence of drugs. He had already thrown two ‘bombs’ and was preparing to throw two more when Gurgaon police apprehended him. No one was harmed. We are questioning him to check the motive and if he is related to any crime syndicate,” the officer added.
Varun Suhag, the manager of Human Night Club, said the accused was on the road and had not gone inside. “The club is open till 6 am and the incident took place half an hour before we were closing. Police visited the club and collected CCTV footage,” said Suhag.
Another officer said the police had scaled up security in the area after two crude bomb blasts were reported outside a lounge and bar in Chandigarh’s Sector 26 on November 26. An accused linked to Goldy Brar was arrested in connection with the Chandigarh incident. “Bunkers were set up in the area after those reports and teams were at the team stationed there when the incident took place on Tuesday,” the officer said.
