Gurgaon administration fines 606 school buses for flouting rules in wake of Mahendragarh accident

After the accident in Haryana’s Mahendragarh that claimed the lives of six children, 2,100 school buses in Gurgaon went through a three-day inspection.

A total of 606 buses were fined and impounded as per the orders of Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav. The authorities have clarified that no faulty school bus will be allowed to operate in the area.

Six students were killed on the morning of April 11 in the Mahendragarh district when a school bus driver, who was allegedly drunk and driving the vehicle recklessly, rammed the bus into a tree, and the vehicle overturned.

An extensive inspection campaign of school buses is being conducted at five locations in Gurgaon to ensure safe school transportation for children. On Sunday, 1,260 buses from 143 schools were inspected. Of these, 406 buses were fined, and three were impounded.

On Friday, the administration inspected 45 buses, of which 16 were challaned and 11 impounded. On Saturday, 795 buses were checked, of which 184 were challaned.

The drive aims to cover 2,600 buses from 527 schools in the district.

The RTO and police department fined buses that failed to comply with all 24 points of the safe school vehicle policy. The police administration is inspecting buses from 527 schools in rural and urban areas of the district.

Teams of officials from the traffic police, Haryana Roadways, and education department inspected school buses in front of the Mini-Secretariat, Leisure Valley Ground, Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Sector One of HUDA, and Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Sohna.

DC Yadav said that this campaign will continue indefinitely. “Not a single faulty vehicle will be allowed to operate for the safety of school students. Clear directives have been issued by the chief secretary of the Haryana government regarding this, and inspections of school buses are being carried out in all districts of the state,” he said.

He added that school buses meeting all standards, such as CCTV cameras, speed governors, first aid kits, GPS systems, trained drivers, conductors, etc., will be allowed to operate on the district’s roads.
