The Delhi government on Monday decided in principle to increase the number of districts in the city from nine to 11.

“The details are being worked out. This will bring governance closer to the people’s doorsteps,” Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said after a Cabinet meeting.

The city currently has nine districts and 27 sub-divisions,which were created on January 1,1997.

Earlier, the Law department had taken up the matter with the Centre to allow division of the metropolitan area for public convenience. A committee, formed to look into the matter, had recommended creation of 11 revenue districts in order to ensure better governance.

In view of the committee’s recommendations and the demography of the nine districts,it became necessary to rejig district boundaries and increase the number of districts to 11,officials said.
