Four dead as fire breaks out at electronics store in West Delhi

According to DFS officials, four people — two women and two men — fell unconscious after inhaling smoke and were rushed to nearby hospitals in ambulances.

It was a usual Monday for Amandeep Kaur (22), who worked at the cash counter of an electronics store in West Delhi’s Raja Garden. She had taken a lunch break with her friends when suddenly a massive fire broke out at the store.

“The whole room started filling with smoke and they couldn’t see anything. They decided to go downstairs but they couldn’t see through the smoke and when they went towards the terrace, the door was locked and there was no other way out,” said Sunil Singla, her uncle.

Kaur was among the four people who were killed in the fire that broke out at Mahajan Electronics on the second floor of a four-storey building. The other three deceased, who were her coworkers, have been identified as Aayushi (22), Payal (20), and Ravi (28). Another person, Sandeep, who was injured in the incident, is still under treatment, said police.

According to the police, the PCR call regarding the fire was received around 3 pm, prompting the police personnel and Delhi Fire Services (DFS) to rush to the spot. The DFS deployed five fire tenders at the site.

“Upon reaching there, people there informed us that five persons were trapped inside. After efforts, all of them were taken out and sent to hospitals. Four persons have lost their lives in this unfortunate incident while one is under treatment,” said DCP (West) Vichitra Veer.

The four persons, who lost their lives, fell unconscious after inhaling smoke and were rushed to nearby hospitals in ambulances, said DFS officials. The fire was doused by 4:10 pm.

Singla said that Kaur had begun working at the cash counter of the electronics store last October, and lived close by with her family in Raghubir Nagar.

Kaur’s family was informed of the fire after someone from the store called them on Monday evening.
“My wife called me around 4 pm and told me that Amandeep had been hurt in the fire and taken to Guru Gobind Singh Hospital…we weren’t worried because we thought it’s just an injury. I was away from home so I told my other daughter and wife to go check. Around half an hour later, I was told that they saw my daughter dead in the hospital bed,” said Kaur’s father Jagjeet.

While talking to reporters present at the scene, Amandeep’s mother, Parvinder Kaur, said that her daughter had flagged safety lapses. “She had told me earlier that when they go to eat upstairs, there is no place to escape from if there ever was an accident. But they would still go upstairs sometimes to eat there…all four of them. The staircases are so narrow in that building, there’s no way anyone could have escaped,” said Parvinder.
