Even as the water level in the Yamuna river has gradually been receding, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal cautioned citizens against swimming in it or visiting flooded areas for videos and selfies. Referring to a video of children playing in floodwaters, the chief minister warned that such activity could turn fatal.
The declining trend of the water level in the Yamuna continued Saturday, logging 207.58 metres at 9 am. It is expected to dip to 206.72 metres by 10 pm.
The danger, however, was far from over, Kejriwal cautioned. “There are reports from many places that some people are going to play or swim in the water or are going for video/selfie. Please don’t do this. This can be fatal. The danger of flood is not over yet. The velocity of water is very fast. Water can rise anytime,” he said. According to the chief minister, if there is no heavy rain again, the situation is likely to become normal “soon.”
“Water has started withdrawing from the Chandrawal and Wazirabad water treatment plants. After this, the machines will need to dry. Both the plants will be operational only by tomorrow. Please take care and help each other,” he advised.
On Friday, the bodies of three children were recovered from a ditch at a Metro construction site in Northwest Delhi’s Mukundpur Chowk, the police said. The children drowned in the floodwater-filled ditch while they were taking a bath.
