In an alleged road rage incident, a DTC bus driver was thrashed to death by a group of men in Aman Vihar area of Delhi, said police. Four men have been identified for assaulting the driver and one has been apprehended, officers said. The deceased has been identified as Vikas (27). He was the sole breadwinner of his family.
According to the police, a PCR call was received on Saturday around 11,20 pm regarding a fight during a wedding procession. “A police team reached the Shiv Chowk area where it was found that a fight broke out between a DTC bus driver and a man attending the wedding, who was driving an Alto, over lack of passage and the congestion on road,” a senior police officer said.
The Alto driver allegedly called his relatives, who assaulted the DTC driver. A bystander, Suraj, who attempted to intervene, also sustained injuries. Both were shifted to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, and the DTC driver was later referred to Safdarjung Hospital. The injured driver succumbed to his injuries on Sunday afternoon.
An FIR was registered after the conductor of the bus, Umesh (36), gave a statement to the police under the section of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. “All four accused have been identified. One of the accused, Rahul, has been apprehended; others are absconding. Raids are ongoing to arrest them. Further investigation is in progress,” the police officer added.
Angry over the incident, Vikas’s family members staged a protest on the Dwarka-Gurgaon highway with his body on Sunday.
Several DTC bus drivers also joined the protest and demanded the strictest punishment for the accused. The DTC bus drivers at the Rohini Depot held a day-long strike as they sought better provisions for safety and compensation for the family. They also demanded that medical insurance facilities should also be provided to the drivers.
