A Zomato delivery agent was allegedly abused by a drunk teacher and his friend after he asked for the payment for the delivered food, Delhi Police said on Wednesday. The teacher, however, accused the police and the delivery agent of beating him up after he refused to pay the extra money demanded by him.
The incident came to light when a video on social media showed a delivery agent and two policemen dragging Rishi Kumar from his flat in the Narela area of Outer North Delhi.
Rishi Kumar told reporters that he had cancelled his order well in advance, but the delivery agent, Arjun, still came to his house and demanded Rs 300 in extra charges from him. “He said I have another order, which I didn’t. He then abused me and came back with a couple of policemen,” Kumar said
According to the police, when the Narela police station received a call from Arjun, he reported that two people in an inebriated state had ordered food, and then at the time of the delivery ,forcibly took the food without paying the money. They also abused him, Hareshwar Swami, DCP, Outer North, said.
The police claimed that once a couple of officers reached the spot, Arjun pointed to a man named Rishi Kumar as the one who abused him.
“Rishi Kumar was found in an inebriated state and started abusing the police officials when questioned. He also resisted the policemen but was taken out of the room forcefully—directly to a hospital for medical examination,” DCP Swami said.
The medical report showed that the man had consumed alcohol. The police later discovered that he had given “Ram Kumar” as his name, instead of his real name, during the medical examination.
“As the delivery boy had to go further on his job, he didn’t make any complaint at that time. So Rishi Kumar, a teacher, was counselled and sent back home. An inquiry into the matter is being conducted,” DCP Swami said.
