One of the BJP youth wing activists seriously injured in the police action during their protest on Tuesday is a handicapped man.

Twenty-six-year-old Rakesh Kumar, handicapped due to polio since childhood, sustained multiple injuries on his body when officials allegedly resorted to lathi charge to disperse the crowd. He is under observation at the ortho-trauma ward of RML Hospital.

Nearly 60 persons, including security personnel, were injured in the clash.

Rakesh,BJP Mandal president from Bihar, was in Delhi to attend the Yuva Morcha rally against corruption near Jantar Mantar on Parliament street.

Covered in bandages, the BJP activist told Newsline,“I was beaten up ruthlessly by many policemen when I was just standing by and listening to the speech of our youth wing president Anurag Thakur. I told them not to hit me as I was handicapped and could not run,but they kept hitting me.”

Two BJP workers are looking after him in the hospital. He is likely to be discharged a week later,RML officials said.

Rakesh said he got involved with the BJP in 1994 and has attended many rallies despite his handicap.

Though seriously injured,he said the incident will not dampen his spirit to be on the road when his party requires him next.

An official at the Parliament Street police station said he was not aware of a handicapped man being beaten up by the policemen, but the matter would be looked into.
