Delhi: Three govt school teachers fired ‘for beating up students’

During the inspection, children of Classes IX and XII reportedly told Sisodia about teachers beating up students.

The students also said they were unable to understand whatever was being taught to them in Physics, since no practical classes were being held.

Following the complaints, the government terminated the services of a trained graduate teacher (TGT) Science teacher, TGT Social Science teacher and PGT Physics teacher.

A TGT Hindi teacher, Accounts lecturer and the school vice-principal have also been suspended, said an official from the education department.

“The students gave the minister an indication that they weren’t being treated well. The minister then asked the teachers and principal to leave the room, so that the students could speak without fear. They told the minister that two teachers repeatedly engaged in physical violence and used abusive language,” said an aide of the minister present during the inspection.

Sisodia, who also holds the Education portfolio, directed the principal and teachers to treat students with affection and sensitivity.

He said attempts to browbeat children would be counter-productive and they would stop respecting their elders.

The minister said it is the duty of students to respect their teachers but that would only be possible if students were treated with affection.
