Delhi’s peak power demand crosses 7,000 MW-mark for first time this summer

The city’s peak power demand, however, has been significantly lower as compared to last year because of frequent western disturbances bringing rain to the city at regular intervals.

With rising temperatures, Delhi’s peak power demand crossed the 7,000 MW-mark for the first time this summer.

The maximum temperature on Monday was 41.8 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was 29.8 degrees Celsius, both two degrees above normal. The peak power demand was recorded as 7,098 MW at 3:29 pm.

The city’s peak power demand, however, has been significantly lower as compared to last year because of frequent western disturbances bringing rain to the city at regular intervals. The average temperatures in April and May were also lower than the average.

Power demand has seen wide variations this month so far, with June 1 clocking in a demand of 4,390 MW.

In June last year, in contrast, the demand was above 7,000 MW on nine occasions with the all-time record for demand being set at 7,695 MW on June 29.

Delhi’s expected peak power demand for 2023 was 8,100 MW, which at present is far from being breached.

Power Discom BSES said it caters to around 2 crore residents of South, West, East and Central Delhi. It has agreements with Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand to meet the demand.
