Kailash Gahlot flags off 80 AC buses, DTC to induct 62 e-buses in the coming days
Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot Wednesday flagged off 80 AC CNG buses under cluster services from Rajghat bus depot, taking the city’s public transport fleet to 7,080.
Officials from the Transport Department said the DTC fleet will get 62 electric buses over the next two weeks. At present, the city has only two e-buses.
These dark blue cluster buses are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including pink seats for women, separate seats for senior citizens, a foldable ramp for people with disabilities, CCTVs and panic buttons with hooters to help women sound the alarm and live video streaming in case of emergency.

An FIR has been registered, days after the official Twitter handle of the United Grants Commission (UGC), which has 2.98 lakh followers, was allegedly hacked and 24,000 spam messages were tweeted from it, the Delhi Police said on Friday.
According to the FIR, the Twitter handle of the UGC (ugc_india), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education, was hacked at around 1.30 am on April 10.
"A complaint has been registered with Twitter as well. Twitter has provided regain access and now the handle is being used officially. But the spam tweets, approximately 24,000, have to be deleted manually, as informed by Twitter," the FIR stated.
"An FIR has been registered under sections 66 (whoever, by means of any communication device or computer resource, cheats by personation) and 66C (punishment for identify theft) of the IT Act on the complaint of an IT consultant who works with the Swayam project of the UGC," a senior police officer said. The Delhi Police has busted a gang that defrauded people selling them air tickets online only to cancel them later, officials said on Friday. The two masterminds of the operation, identified as Pravin Tiwari, a resident of Bahraich (UP), and Rohit Kumar, a resident of Rewari (Haryana) -- both aged 34 years -- have been arrested.
The officials said they have recovered a gold chain from the accused -- purchased from the cheated money -- and seized Rs 61,267 found in their bank account. The police said the fraud was exposed on March 29, when a Delhi University professor filed a complaint alleging getting scammed by a booking agent online. (PTI)
A 55-year-old woman died after being attacked by a stray bull outside her residence in Noida’s Phase 1. Police said the incident took place Friday morning when the woman, Mamta Sharma, stepped out to buy food for her children.
She was walking towards a shop when a stray bull charged at her and attacked her with its horns. She fell to the ground, and even as locals rushed to help her, the bull attacked her again and Sharma collapsed. She was then taken to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. Read more
Guest teachers of Delhi government schools and the All India Parents’ Association have got together to start a campaign to identify those not enrolled in school and help them with admissions.
The All India Guest Teachers’ Association has identified 472 venues in which to conduct this campaign based on inputs from teachers on where there is likely to be a sizable number of children, mostly slum areas.
Their campaign started on April 14, a school holiday because of Ambedkar Jayanti, and teachers said that they will continue with a door-to-door identification exercise on holidays. Read more

Delhi Metro operations on a section of the busy Blue Line will not be available in the initial few hours on Sunday due to planned maintenance work on the segment, officials said on Friday.
The affected section will be between Rajiv Chowk and Karol Bagh metro stations of the corridor. To undertake the scheduled track maintenance work on the Blue Line, train services on the morning of Sunday on this corridor will be briefly regulated, the officials said.
Train services will be suspended between Rajiv Chowk and Karol Bagh stations from the start of revenue services till 7 am. Hence, two metro stations, namely Ram Krishna Ashram Marg and Jhandewalan, will be closed till the resumption of train services in the section i.e., up to 7 am, they said.
Blue Line connects Dwarka Sector 21 in Delhi to Noida Electronic City/Vaishali.
Metro services will be available between Noida Electronic City/Vaishali-Rajiv Chowk, and Karol Bagh- Dwarka Sec-21, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said. (PTI)

The Delhi Congress on Friday demanded that the Kejriwal government ramp up daily testing and intensify the drive for the administration of booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines in view of the uptick in coronavirus infections in the city.
The daily COVID-19 cases in Delhi have been on the rise over the last few days and the positivity rate has jumped from 0.5 per cent to 2.7 per cent in a week. Delhi reported 325 fresh COVID-19 cases on Thursday, 299 on Wednesday and 137 on Monday, according to health department data.
The health department did not issue a bulletin on Tuesday.
Delhi Congress president Anil Kumar said lockdown and closure of schools cannot be the way to tackle a surge in COVID-19 cases. "The Kejriwal government should ensure that people adhere to COVID-19 protocol in public places instead of taking the easy way out and enforcing another total lockdown," he said. (PTI)
Three juveniles were apprehended on Friday for allegedly stabbing a 45-year-old ice-cream vendor to death in northeast Delhi's Bhajanpura, police said. According to police, the incident took place in Subhash Vihar area on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. Two baton swords used in the crime were also recovered from them.
All the juveniles who were aged between 15 to 16 years had fled to Meerut (UP) after killing Tamkeen and later returned back to their Delhi home, police said. Police said Tamkeen used to be an ice-cream vendor in the morning and would sell vegetables in the evening.
The victim used to taunt and threaten the minors and a day before the murder, Tamkeen had slapped one of them which led to a scuffle between them, the police added. The victim was standing near his house when three juveniles allegedly came on foot and stabbed him. They fled from the spot in a motorcycle.
The injured man was taken to GTB hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, said Devesh Kumar Mahla, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast). A case was registered under sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code in connection with the incident, he said. (PTI)
With St Stephen's College announcing that it will conduct interviews carrying 15 per cent weightage for admissions across categories, Delhi University vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh on Friday said the varsity does not want any confrontation and will resolve the issue through dialogue.
In an admission notice posted on its website on Tuesday, St Stephen's College said it will give 85 per cent weightage to Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores and 15 per cent to interviews it will conduct for admissions for all categories of students.
The college also said that it reserves the right to proceed with admissions as per its own admission policy guaranteed to it as a minority institution.
While releasing DU's admission policy earlier this month, Singh had said that for the general seats, a college should solely take the CUET scores into consideration and for the minority seats, it can hold interviews and assign a weightage of 85 per cent to CUET scores and 15 per cent to interviews. Days after the taxi and autorickshaw unions threatened to go on an indefinite strike demanding subsidy on CNG, Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Friday announced that the department will constitute a committee soon to revise fuel prices.
“Due to the rising fuel prices, auto/taxi unions have been demanding revision of fares. Arvind Kejriwal Government understand their concerns. A committee shall soon be constituted by transport department for this purpose, which shall furnish its recommendations in a time bound manner,” said Gahlot in a tweet. Read more
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Friday said a specific wing in schools or classrooms where a COVID-19 case has been detected should be closed temporarily and clarified that the entire school should only be closed in specific cases.
The comments by Sisodia, who is also the Education Minister, came against the backdrop of rising cases of COVID-19 among school children and staff members. A meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has been called on April 20 to review the situation in the national capital.
"We haven't asked them to close schools. Our guidelines say that only a specific wing or classroom where someone was found COVID positive should be temporarily closed. Schools can take a decision to close the entire premises in specific cases where an infected child or staff has been through multiple areas of the school, we have made it decentralised," Sisodia said in response to a question during a press conference.
The Directorate of Education (DoE) issued a fresh advisory for schools in the national capital on April 13, directing them to close the entire premises or specific wings temporarily if any student or staff tests positive for COVID-19. The department also said students and staff must wear masks and maintain social distancing to the extent possible. (PTI)
A fresh heatwave is sweeping across parts of Rajasthan, Delhi and Haryana, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stating that these conditions are likely to continue till April 19.
The Met department also announced on Friday that these regions are experiencing the third heatwave of this season. This comes after a prolonged and severe spell of heatwave abated barely three days ago. Amid an uptick in daily cases of COVID-19 in Delhi and the positivity rate going beyond two per cent, there has been a rise of nearly 48 percent in the number of home isolation cases here in the last one week, according to official data.
On Thursday, the number of home isolation cases stood at 574 while 325 new coronavirus cases were recorded with a positivity rate of 2.39 per cent.
The daily cases have been on the rise in the last few days while the positivity rate here has been registered in excess of one per cent since April 4 when it had stood at 1.34 per cent.
As the Covid positivity rate in the national capital has jumped from 0.57 per cent on April 1 to 2.39 per cent on April 14, the number of home isolation cases has shown an upward trend in the last one week. (PTI)

The Supreme Court has directed the Central Pollution Control Board and state pollution control boards to conduct surprise inspections at brick kilns in the National Capital Region (NCR) to ensure that the production is carried out in terms of the notification issued by the Environment Ministry.
A bench comprising Justices K M Joseph and Justice Hrishikesh Roy passed a slew of directions for operation of brick kilns in NCR.
The top court said that those units, located in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, which have the consent to operate and have also declared the production capacity are permitted to operate subject to certain conditions. (PTI)
A fire broke out at a corrugated cardboard box factory in Noida on Friday morning. Twelve fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the blaze was brought under control, officials said. No person was injured in the incident.
The cause of the fire, which broke out around 7 am at the factory in Sector 65, is yet to be ascertained. (PTI)
Forty-three people, including 16 children, have tested positive for COVID-19 in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar, the district health department said on Thursday.
The number of active cases in the district has now reached 156. Over 25 per cent of the new cases in the last one week have been reported among children, the health department noted.
According to the official figures, 43 more have tested positive for the infection since Thursday 6 AM while 10 have got cured during the period.
“Of the new cases, 16 children below 18 years of age were found positive. In the last one week, there have been 167 new cases of which 44 or 26.3 per cent have been cases of children,” Chief Medical Officer Dr Sunil Kumar Sharma said. (PTI)

Today morning it has come to notice that few flags and banners have been put on the road and adjoining areas near JNU. In view of the recent incidents, these were promptly removed and suitable legal action is being taken, said DCP (southwest) Manoj C.

A man died and five others sustained injuries after an air-conditioner compressor exploded, causing a fire at an eatery in southeast Delhi's Jamia Nagar on Thursday, police said.
Nadeem and Shaan were called to repair the air-conditioner at the eatery on the ground floor of a two-storey building. "Due to the explosion, Nadeem sustained severe injuries on his head and chest and was found bleeding and unconscious," a senior police officer said, adding that he died during treatment.
Shaan along with Danish, Ajju, Bijay and Ikra sustained injuries and were admitted to the Holy Family Hospital for treatment, an official said, adding that Ikra was discharged after a few hours.
"A call about the fire was received at 3.49 pm and three fire tenders were rushed to the spot," said Atul Garg, Director, Delhi Fire Service. The fire was extinguished within an hour, he added.
Meanwhile, a case is being registered under appropriate sections of law for alleged negligence. Purported videos of the incident showed local people rescuing the injured and taking them to the hospital in e-rickshaws and auto-rickshaws. (PTI)
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) claimed on Thursday that the central government was "refraining" from answering its queries regarding the proposed committee on minimum support price (MSP) of crops.
The SKM expressed "surprise" over Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar's remarks on Wednesday that the Centre was still awaiting names of members from farmers' unions for setting up the panel on MSP.
In a statement, the SKM, an umbrella body of farm unions, said it has refused to give names to the Centre for the committee until it is clear who will be part of it and what will be its purpose. (PTI)
Two men have been identified for killing a 40-year-old caretaker of a farmhouse and assaulting a few others on suspicion of slaughtering cows, police said on Thursday. Rajaram was assaulted in a farmhouse in Chhawla area in Southwest Delhi and succumbed to injuries at a hospital on Monday, they said.
Two FIRs were registered on two separate complaints, one of them was filed by the injured men, and another by some locals. Five men have been arrested for the alleged cow slaughter so far, while none for murder and assault.
"We had arrested five men for cow slaughter. Our teams are now looking for the men involved in assault and murder. Around 10-15 of them had fled the scene by the time our team arrived," a senior police officer said. (PTI)
At least five students and staff members of a top private school in Vasant Kunj have tested positive for Covid in the last week, triggering concerns among parents about the safety of their wards and a possible closure of schools again.
While a section of parents claimed that the school did not inform them, and children continued to attend classes with those who contracted the viral disease, the institution categorically denied the charge.
"As students across the Delhi-NCR test Covid positive, schools are struggling with protocols. My child's school has at least eight kids and two staff members who tested positive. But no proper information was given by the school. The school is functioning normally," a parent claimed. (PTI)

The maximum temperature which had remained at 40 degrees Celsius or above from April 8 to 12 at the Safdarjung weather observatory fell slightly on Wednesday and Thursday.

Cruelty and isolated acts of adultery by a wife do not disentitle her from receiving maintenance from her husband, the Delhi High Court has said.
Justice Chandra Dhari Singh, who was dealing with a challenge to a trial court directing the husband to pay monthly maintenance to the wife, stated that only continuous and repeated acts of adultery by the wife would attract the legal exception to the grant of payment of an allowance by the husband.
The trial court, in its order passed under section 125 CrPC, had directed that husband pay the wife Rs 15,000 per month with effect from August 2020. (PTI)

The Delhi Police Crime Branch has arrested a goldsmith who purchased the stolen jewellery belonging to actor Sonam Kapoor's mother-in-law, a senior officer said on Thursday.
The jewellery was stolen from Kapoor's Amrita Shergill Road residence by a nurse and her husband employed by her. The jeweller was identified as Dev Verma, 40, a resident of Kalkaji, police said.
They said they have recovered from Verma stolen jewellery worth more than Rs 1 crore that included 100 diamonds, six gold chains, diamond bangles, a diamond bracelet, two tops, and one brass coin. (PTI)
A Delhi court has acquitted former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain in a case of allegedly defacing public property by putting up a board wishing people a Happy New Year in 2015.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Arun Kumar Garg granted the relief to the politician, saying there was no evidence produced by the prosecution to prove that the board/hoarding was either installed by the accused or that the same was installed at his instance or for his benefit.
“In fact, the IO (investigating officer) has failed to point out in the charge sheet as to how he had pinned down the name of the accused as the installer of the board, in as much as, he has neither recorded the statement of residents of the locality where the board in question was found affixed by the police nor has he recorded the statement of the printer,” the judge said in the order passed on Wednesday. The AAP government has allocated Rs 476.89 crore for the development of various mandis in the capital, including over Rs 175 crores for Aazadpur market, Delhi Development Minister Gopal Rai said on Thursday.
Orders were also issued for the installation of CCTV cameras at all mandis in the capital, he said. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Rai with senior officials, including those from the Delhi Agricultural Marketing Board (DAMB) and the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC). Rai said the DAMB has approved a budget of Rs 476.89 crore for the development of mandis in the capital.
He said of the total budget, Rs 178.73 crore has been kept for the development of Azadpur Mandi and renovation of Kisan Bhawan so that farmers can get temporary accommodation there. (PTI)

A call about the fire was received at 3.49 pm and three fire tender were rushed to the spot, said Atul Garg, Director, Delhi Fire Service.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann and his staff will visit Delhi government schools on Monday to see the "remarkable improvement" the Aam Aadmi Party regime has brought in them.
His remarks came days after opposition parties alleged that the Punjab government was being run through "remote control" from Delhi after Kejriwal held a meeting in the national capital with the state's top bureaucrats in the absence of Mann.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia Thursday said the government will come out with a common set of guidelines for schools to follow if cases are detected among students.
“We are keeping track of all cases in schools and have been giving individual directions to schools where cases have emerged. For the next two-three days, schools have holidays, so I have asked the education department to come out with a common set of guidelines for all schools under the new framework. This should be ready by tomorrow… There is no big outbreak as of now. We are seeing one-two cases in schools. In some cases, it is a student, in others, teachers are testing positive for Covid,” he said. Read more

In view of the uptick in Covid cases in the national capital, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) will hold a meeting on April 20 to discuss measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the city, officials said on Thursday.
Delhi on Wednesday reported 299 Covid cases, a jump of 118 per cent in two days. The positivity rate stood at 2.49 per cent, according to data shared by the city health department. The city had recorded 137 cases on Monday, the data showed.
"The Delhi Disaster Management Authority's meeting is scheduled to be held on Wednesday next week under the chairmanship of the Lt Governor. It will discuss the prevailing Covid situation, including the recent rise in the number of cases," a senior Delhi government official said. (PTI)

No specific words against any community were uttered during an event held in New Delhi in December last year, the Delhi Police has told the Supreme Court which is hearing a plea seeking direction to ensure investigation and action against those who allegedly made hate speeches during two events held in Haridwar and Delhi.
In a counter affidavit filed in the apex court, the Delhi Police has said the petitioners had not approached them for taking any action in connection with the alleged incident and have directly moved the top court and such a practice must be deprecated.
The top court is hearing a petition filed by journalist Qurban Ali and former Patna High Court judge and senior advocate Anjana Prakash, who have also sought a direction for an “independent, credible and impartial investigation” by an SIT into the incidents of hate speeches against the Muslim community. From deploying its 1,800 staff to residential areas, markets, and agricultural lands to keeping stations filled with adequate firefighting equipment and water, the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) said they have made special arrangements to cater to the increasing number of fire calls this summer season.
Officials on Monday said they received 1,341 fire calls in the first 10 days of April. The fire department has been facing several challenges as there’s an 8 per cent increase in the fire calls this month already because of the harsh weather conditions.
According to the data shared by the fire department, 1,230 calls were reported from April 1 to April 10 last year with a minimum of 98 calls per day. This year in April, at least 120-130 fire calls are reported every day. The calls are expected to rise because of garbage fires, the heat, and short circuits in residential and commercial areas. The maximum temperature in Delhi could be around 39 degrees Celsius Thursday, bringing brief respite from heatwave conditions, with strong winds likely during the day, predicted the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The fall in temperature to below 40 degrees Celsius is likely to be short-lived. The maximum temperature is set to rise to around 41 degrees on April 17, and further to 42 degrees on April 18. Heatwave conditions are forecast to return in Delhi from April 18 to 20. The maximum temperature is also likely to rise by two to four degrees over most parts of northwest India during the next four to five days, according to the IMD. Read more.
East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) commissioner Vikas Anand said they will bring education back to track through the Mission Buniyaad and Nipun Bharat programmes in all schools under the civic body.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the consequent closure of schools in the Capital, there has been a huge gap in the education of children in the last two years, Anand added. Under the Mission Buniyaad programme, a baseline assessment of all children from classes 3 to 5 will be done. “Reading, writing, and basic mathematical ability will improve through this programme,” said Anand. Covid cases in Delhi are increasing rapidly again, with the health department reporting 299 cases on Wednesday at a positivity rate of 2.49 per cent. Delhi had reported 304 cases on March 4 after which a swift decline was seen. In total, over the past two days, the city has recorded 501 new cases, with the active case count rising to 814.
According to Wednesday’s health bulletin, with the increase in cases being observed only a few days ago, most hospital beds are still empty. Out of 9,745 Covid beds in hospitals, only 43 are occupied at present. Of these, 43, 32 are occupied by suspected Covid patients. Of the 11 confirmed Covid cases, five are in the ICU and five on oxygen support. Read more.
Contrary to Delhi University’s directives, St Stephen’s College has notified that it will be conducting interviews carrying 15% weightage for admissions of students of all categories.
St Stephen’s College is one of six minority colleges in Delhi University that reserve 50% of their seats for minority candidates. While issuing different cut-offs for minority and general candidates, the college has also conducted interviews to finalise its students from among the shortlisted candidates through cut-offs for both categories of students.
In its admission policy released last week, Delhi University had notified that in these minority colleges, admissions to the 50% unreserved seats will only be on the basis of the Common University Entrance Test score and admission to the reserved seats will be conducted, with an 85% weightage to CUET score and 15% weightage to interviews conducted by the college.
